The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the use of the side products of cassava as a component of rations on the performance and digestibility of the ration on peranakan pigs of newly weaning male landrace. The specific objectives of this study were:

To determine the effect of the use of the side products of cassava on the income over feed cost (iOFC) of peranakan pigs of newly weaning male landrace.

Methodology

This study was conducted in the village of Rumah Mbacang Pancur Batu between April and June 2019. The study used a complete random design method (RAL) with four different treatments, each repeated four times. The treatments consisted of:

P0: Rations without the side yield of cassava (control).
P1: Rations containing 20% by side yield of cassava.
P2: Rations containing 40% by side yield of cassava.
P3: Rations containing 60% by side yield of cassava.

The parameters analyzed included ration consumption, body weight gain, ration conversion, ration digestibility (digestibility of dry material and digestibility of organic matter), and income over feed cost (iOFC).

Results

The results of this study showed that the use of the side products of cassava had a significant effect (p <0.01) on the parameters under study. The highest consumption of rations was recorded in P1 treatment with a value of 1546.64 g/head/day. Furthermore, the highest body weight gain was also found in P1 treatment, which is 296.43 g/head/day. The best ration conversion is recorded in P1 treatment with a value of 5.22. Dry of dry material and organic matter also increased in P1 treatment, with a percentage of 77.72% and 73.77% respectively. In terms of economy, the best iOFC was also obtained from P1 treatment, amounting to Rp 100,695.91/tail.

Discussion and Implications

Based on the results achieved, it can be concluded that the use of the side products of cassava in the best complete ration is with a level of use of 20%. The advantage of using cassava in the ration is allegedly associated with a fairly good nutritional content and ease of digestion of food. Cassava which is rich in carbohydrates can be an effective source of energy for weaning pigs, which are in the period of growth and development.

The implications of this finding are important for pig breeders in minimizing the cost of rations while maintaining optimal animal performance. By integrating the side products of cassava, farmers can not only reduce feed input costs but also increase the efficiency of feed conversion into quality livestock products.

In the end, the use of the side products of cassava has great potential in the animal husbandry sector, especially in pork feed. This research provides guidance for farmers to use local resources that may not be utilized to the maximum. Through the development of rations based on local agricultural products, livestock productivity can increase so as to contribute to better food security.
