The Influence of Several Insecticides on the Population of Elaeidobius Camerunicus Faust. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the Kalianta Riau Garden

Introduction

The pollination beetle Elaeidobius Camerunicus is a crucial insect in the process of pollination of oil palm plants. Its importance cannot be overstated, as it plays a vital role in the reproduction of oil palm trees. However, the use of insecticides in oil palm plantations has raised concerns about the impact on the population of this pollinating beetle. This study aims to examine the effect of several types of insecticides on the population of Elaeidobius Camerunicus in the Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI) Experiment Garden in Kalianta, Riau.

Background

Oil palm plantations are a significant contributor to the economy of many countries, including Indonesia. However, the use of insecticides in these plantations has raised concerns about the impact on the environment and human health. The pollination beetle Elaeidobius Camerunicus is an important insect in the process of pollination of oil palm plants. Its population is crucial for the reproduction of oil palm trees, and any decline in its population can have significant consequences for the oil palm industry.

Methodology

This study was conducted during August to September 2016 using a non-factorial random group design (RKA) with active insecticide as a treatment: Delthametrin, Acefat, Lambda Cyhalotrin, and Bacillus Thuringiensis, with five replications. The study aimed to examine the effect of these insecticides on the population of Elaeidobius Camerunicus in the IOPRI Experiment Garden in Kalianta, Riau.

Results

The results of this study showed that the application of insecticides caused a decrease in the population of Elaeidobius Camerunicus. The decline in population can be seen in the indicator of the number of male beetles in male flowers, which before the application reached 1666 and after the application was only 1030. Similarly, in the female beetle in female flowers, which before the application amounted to 5966 tails and after the application was reduced to 3987 tails. Meanwhile, the indicator of the emergence of new beetles does not show significant differences between treatments. In addition, the number of beetle visits in interest also experienced a significant decline from 113 visits before the application to 33 visits after the application.

Discussion

The results of this study show that the use of insecticides can have a negative impact on the population of Elaeidobius Camerunicus. Decreased pollinating beetle population can result in a reduction in the pollination process, which in turn will reduce the production of oil palm. Therefore, the use of insecticides needs to be done carefully and selectively to minimize the negative impacts on populations Elaeidobius Camerunicus. It is also important to note that this research only uses four types of insecticides. There are still many other types of insecticides used in oil palm plantations. Therefore, further research needs to be done to determine the impact of various types of insecticides on population Elaeidobius Camerunicus. In addition, this research is only conducted in one location. To get more representative results, similar research needs to be done in various locations with different environmental conditions.
