Research Objectives and Methodology

This study aims to examine the level of knowledge, attitudes, actions, and use of antibiotics among the people of Mandailing Natal Regency. By understanding these variables, it is hoped that the root of the problem can be found in the use of inappropriate antibiotics. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional method involving 198 respondents who were selected simply, according to the predetermined inclusion criteria. Data collection was carried out in March 2019 in Mandailing Natal Regency, using a validated questionnaire and reliability tested based on research conducted by Alfonsa Liquory Seran (2015). The data collected is processed using IBM SPSS Statistics 24 with univariate and bivariate analysis through the Chi-Square test.

Research Findings

From the results of research on 198 respondents, it was found that:

Knowledge Level: 75 respondents (37.9%) have a good level of knowledge about antibiotics.
Attitude: 124 respondents (62.6%) show a pretty good attitude towards the use of antibiotics.
Action: 125 respondents (63.1%) have enough action in using antibiotics correctly.

In terms of antibiotic use, the majority of people use antibiotics to treat fever (59 respondents or 29.8%). The most widely used antibiotics are amoxicillin (139 respondents or 70.2%), and most people get antibiotics from midwives (67 respondents or 33.8%).

Statistical analysis shows a significant correlation between the level of knowledge of respondents and their work (p <0.1), as well as attitudes related to age and education (p <0.1). In addition, there is a significant correlation between action and age, education, and work (p <0.1). Also found a significant relationship between knowledge and attitude (p <0.1), knowledge with action (p <0.1), as well as attitudes with action (p <0.1).

Conclusion and Recommendations

Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the community related to the use of antibiotics in Mandailing Natal Regency still need to be improved. There are many people who still use incorrect antibiotics, which can lead to greater health problems in the future. Therefore, health education and intervention is needed to increase public awareness of the correct use of antibiotics.
