Methodology

This study was a cross-sectional study conducted at the Polyclinic of Tropical Diseases and Infection on Adam Malik Hospital in Medan from April to July 2020. The study received approval from the Research Ethics Commission of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra (USU). A total of 40 HIV patients undergoing ARV therapy were recruited for the study. The relationship between leptin levels and CD4 counts was analyzed using the Pearson or Spearman correlation. The data were analyzed using the SPSS program, and the value of P < 0.05 was considered significant.

Results

The results of the study showed that the majority of the subjects were men (70%), with the highest level of education being high school graduates (77.5%) and most were married (57.5%). The average age of the subject was 35.07 ± 6.2 years, with the highest HIV stage at stage III (87.5%). The most commonly used ARV treatment regimens were a combination of tenofovir, lamivudin, and efavirenz (87.5%), with an average duration of treatment for 2.48 ± 2,261 years. The average level of leptin in the subject was 1071.47 ± 924.21, and the average number of CD4 was 330.55 ± 163.98.

The results of the analysis showed a significant relationship between leptin levels and CD4 counts (r = 0.351, p = 0.026). This suggests that there is a positive correlation between leptin levels and CD4 counts in HIV patients undergoing ARV therapy. In other words, higher leptin levels are associated with higher CD4 counts.
