Introduction

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most widely cultivated crops in the world, providing a significant source of food and income for millions of people. The granola variety of potato is particularly popular in Indonesia, known for its high economic potential in the market. However, traditional potato cultivation techniques often rely on chemical fertilizers, which can have negative environmental impacts. In recent years, researchers have been exploring alternative methods to increase potato productivity, including the use of natural ingredients such as young coconut water.

The Effect of Young Coconut Water on Micro Tuber Production

Research on the effect of young coconut water on micro tuber production in granola varieties of potato plants was conducted from February to July 2017 in the tissue culture laboratory, vegetable research centers, and Berastagi experimental garden, North Sumatra. The main objective of this study was to determine the best concentration of young coconut water that supports the formation and production of micro tubers from potato plants.

Methodology

The design used in this study was a complete random design (RAL) with one factor. Five treatments were given, including the addition of young coconut water with concentrations of 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 ml/L. The results of statistical analysis showed that young coconut water had a significant effect on various plant growth parameters, such as the time of tuber formation, the number of shoots, the number of tubers produced, the diameter of the tubers, and the wet and dry weight of the plant.

Results

The results of this study showed that the addition of young coconut water with a concentration of 200 ml/L produced the highest number of tubers, which was 8.4 pieces, and the fastest tuber formation time of 2.8 weeks. Additionally, the treatment with a concentration of 150 ml/L also gave significant results, producing the highest number of shoots (73 shoots), the largest tuber diameter (6.6720 mm), and the highest plant wet weight (0.9960 g) and dry weight (0.37760 g). On the other hand, the addition of young coconut water with a concentration of 50 ml/L produced the highest wet tuber weight (0.854 g).

Discussion

Young coconut water is known to have rich nutritional content, including vitamins, minerals, and natural growth regulators that can increase plant growth. The content serves to stimulate important physiological processes, such as the formation of new tubers and shoots. In the context of this study, the addition of young coconut water not only accelerated the time for tuber formation but also increased the amount and quality of the resulting tubers.

The optimal concentration of young coconut water in this study was 200 ml/L, which shows that at this level, substances in young coconut water work optimally in improving the process of tuber formation. However, it is also important to note that the provision of young coconut water with a higher concentration does not always lead to better results, as seen in the 250 ml/L treatment, which may have exceeded the limit of plant tolerance.

Conclusion

From an agronomy point of view, this research provides valuable insights on potato cultivation techniques, especially in an effort to increase productivity through the use of natural ingredients such as young coconut water. This can be an environmentally friendly alternative that is more sustainable compared to the use of chemical fertilizers. Thus, for farmers and researchers, the results of this study can be used as a reference to increase potato production, especially granola varieties, which have high economic potential in the market.

Through this research, it is expected to increase understanding of efficient and environmentally friendly plant breeding techniques, and encourage the use of local resources that support agricultural sustainability in Indonesia.
