Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a health disorder characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels due to lack of insulin or resistance to insulin. The incidence of diabetes mellitus in Langkat Regency, based on local health office data in 2015, reached 3.25%. In this context, Pera rice was chosen as an alternative food that can help initiate blood sugar levels. Pera rice is a type of white rice that has a separate, hard, and non-fluffier grain characteristics, with amylose content of more than 20%. This research aims to analyze the effect of consumption of pera rice on blood glucose levels in patients with type II diabetes mellitus in Besadi Village, Kuala District, Langkat Regency.

Research Methods

This research was conducted with a pseudo experimental approach. In this study, the researchers measure the blood glucose levels of the subject which is in a state of fasting, followed by capillary blood sampling to determine glucose levels. The research subject consists of 30 people, which are divided into two groups: 15 intervention groups who receive pera rice and 15 control groups who get fluffier rice, each as much as 100 grams, accompanied by a side dish of fried fish.

Blood sampling is carried out in the 15th, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 minutes after consumption of rice. The sampling technique used is total sampling, and the measurement of blood sugar levels is based on the finger poch method.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The results showed that the consumption of pera rice had a significant impact on blood glucose levels at 15 minutes intervals (p = 0.003), 30 minutes (p = 0.007), 45 minutes (p = 0.004), and 60 minutes (p = 0.012) after consumption. However, after 90 minutes (p = 0.073) and 120 minutes (p = 0.808), there is no significant effect on blood glucose levels. These results indicate that pera rice can help control the surge in blood glucose levels at the beginning of consumption, but the effect does not last long afterwards.
