Introduction

Smoking is a serious public health concern that affects not only the smoker but also those around them. The dangers of second-hand smoke are well-documented, and it is essential to understand the relationship between smokers' characteristics, carbon monoxide (CO) levels in the home, and smoking behavior with carboxyhaemoglobin (HBCO) levels in active smokers. This study aims to analyze the relationship between these factors in the environment of Wek V, Padang Sidempuan City.

Air quality in a room is crucial to human health, and cigarette smoke is a significant contributor to indoor air pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that indoor air pollution causes over 3 million premature deaths worldwide each year. In a closed room, the concentration of pollutants can be much higher than in outdoor environments, making it essential to monitor and control indoor air quality.

Methodology

This study employed an analytical descriptive survey with a cross-sectional design. The research population consisted of all residents in the Wek V Kelurahan I, totaling 1,350 people, and 30 of them were chosen as samples using purposive sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis, chi-square tests for bivariate analysis, and double logistics regression tests for multivariate analysis.

Results

The results of the chi-square test show that there are variables related to carboxyhaemoglobin (HBCO) levels that are higher in active smokers, namely age (p = 0.029), work (p = 0.018), and smoking behavior (p = 0.014). From the analysis of multiple logistics regression, the most dominant variable associated with carboxyhaemoglobin levels is work.

Discussion

The findings of this study suggest that there is a significant relationship between smokers' characteristics, CO levels in the home, and smoking behavior with carboxyhaemoglobin (HBCO) levels in active smokers. The results indicate that age, work, and smoking behavior are significant predictors of carboxyhaemoglobin levels. This suggests that older smokers, those who work, and those with a history of smoking are more likely to have higher carboxyhaemoglobin levels.

Implications

The implications of this study are significant. The results suggest that active smokers in the environment I of Wek V Village should avoid smoking indoors when gathering with family. Cigarette smoke is not only dangerous for smokers themselves but can also cause serious health effects for passive smokers, those who are near smokers. Reduction of cigarette consumption is highly recommended because smoking can cause various diseases, including coronary heart disease, lung cancer, and abnormalities in pregnancy and fetus.
