In northern Sumatra, a region prone to seismic activity, the performance of these sensors can significantly impact the accuracy of earthquake detection. Ambient noise characterization and waveform classification are two essential aspects in improving the quality of seismic sensors. This study aims to utilize machine learning approaches to characterize ambient noise and classify waveforms in the northern Sumatran seismic network, ultimately enhancing the performance of seismic sensors.

Background

Seismic sensors are installed to detect tectonic earthquakes, and their performance can be evaluated through ambient noise characterization and seismic signal classification. The Power Spectral Density Probabilistic Density Functions (PSDPDF) method is used to determine the background level of the network sensor. Additionally, this study focuses on the classification of signals to identify earthquake recordings and energy levels recorded by sensors, using the Wavelet-Machine Learning approach and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model, as well as several other algorithms in Machine Learning.

The primary objectives of this study are to:

Evaluate the performance of each sensor installed, including old broadband sensors and new broadband type sensors and mini region sensors.
