Introduction

The use of renewable and sustainable materials has become increasingly important in recent years, particularly in the production of particle boards. One such material is sugarcane, which is a by-product of the sugar industry and can be used as a raw material for making particle boards. However, the physical and mechanical properties of particle boards made from sugarcane can be affected by the weight of polypropylene used as an adhesive. This study aims to investigate the effect of the weight of polypropylene on the physical and mechanical properties of particle boards made from sugarcane.

Materials and Methods

The process of making particle boards from sugarcane involves three stages: preparation of sugar cane clends, modification of polypropylene, and making particle boards.

Preparation of Sugar Cane Clends

Sugar canes were soaked in 1% NaOH solution for 24 hours to remove lignin and extractive substances. This process was confirmed by a qualitative test using H2SO4 (P) which produced black deposits.

Modification of Polypropylene

Polypropylene was modified with maleat anhydride through the reflux method to form PP-G-MA. The results showed the grafting level 9,459% and the melting point of 166.72 oC. PP-G-MA was then used as an adhesive for making particle boards.

Making Particle Board

This stage involved the mixing of sugarcane, PP, PP-G-MA, Benzoyl Peroxide, and Divinylbenzene pulp with the following variations:

(50: 20: 20: 2: 15) g
(50: 30: 20: 2: 2: 15) g
(50: 40: 20: 20: 2: 15) g
(50: 50: 20: 2: 2: 15) g

The particle board produced was then tested based on SNI 03-2105-2006 to determine its physical and mechanical properties, including:

Density
Water content
Expansion
Modulus of Rupture (MOR)
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE)

The surface analysis of the particle board was done using an electron scanning (SEM) microscope.

Optimal Results and Analysis

The results showed that the ratio (50: 50: 20: 2: 15) g gave optimal results for the particle board. The particle board with the ratio had:

Density: 0.7644 g/cm3
Water content: 1.56%
Expansion: 0.89%
MOR: 123,810 kgf/cm2
MOE: 23214.375 kgf/cm2

Figure SEM shows the effect of adhesive variations on the structure of the particle board.

Conclusion and Implications

This study shows the potential to use sugarcane and modification of polypropylene as raw material for making particle boards with good physical and mechanical properties. Further research can be done to optimize the production process and improve the nature of particle board to be more in line with industrial standards.
