Introduction

In today's digital era, music streaming applications have become increasingly popular among people, especially students. Two of the most well-known music streaming applications are Spotify and Joox. Both applications offer different music services, but both have attracted the attention of their users. This study aims to understand the views of students of the Communication Sciences Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra, class of 2014 about the quality felt from the two applications.

Research Background

The rise of music streaming applications has revolutionized the way people consume music. Spotify and Joox are two of the most popular music streaming applications that have gained a significant following among students. Both applications offer a wide range of music services, but they have different strengths and weaknesses. Spotify is known for its intelligent music recommendation algorithm and user-friendly interface, while Joox offers a variety of interesting features such as karaoke and access to the latest songs, especially from local artists.

Research Methodology

This study uses a qualitative approach involving 14 students who actively use or have used Spotify and Joox. Data collection techniques are carried out through in-depth interviews, and data analysis following the Miles and Huberman models, which include data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The study aims to explore how students assess the quality of each application using theories such as marketing communication, brand equity, and perceived quality.

Research Result

From the analysis conducted, it was found that nine informants argue that the quality of Spotify as a whole is better than Joox. They recognize Spotify's superior features that make music listening experience better. On the other hand, five informants expressed preferences to Joox, especially in terms of the choice of more diverse local songs and several other interesting features.

Product Quality Analysis

In terms of product quality, both applications have their own strength and uniqueness. Spotify is known for its intelligent music recommendation algorithm and user-friendly interface, which makes it easy for users to find new music. In addition, the audio quality offered by Spotify is often praised by its users. However, the subscription price that is considered expensive by some users is a factor that reduces its appeal.

Meanwhile, Joox offers a variety of interesting features such as karaoke and access to the latest songs, especially from local artists. This makes Joox a favorite choice for those who like domestic music. However, some users complain about the quality of streaming that is not as good as Spotify, especially in terms of consistency and stability during listening.

Conclusion

Through this research, it can be concluded that students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra have a variety of views on these two music streaming applications. Although Spotify is generally considered to have better quality, Joox remains attractive to the user segment who likes local content. Therefore, both Spotify and Joox have each complementary added value, so that users can choose according to their personal needs and preferences.

Implication

By understanding this student opinion, it is hoped that application developers can further optimize their products to be more in line with the wishes and needs of users in Indonesia. The findings of this study can be used as a reference for application developers to improve their products and provide better services to their users.

Limitation

This study has several limitations. The study only involves 14 students who actively use or have used Spotify and Joox. The study also only focuses on the perceived quality of the two applications and does not explore other aspects of the applications. Future studies can explore other aspects of the applications and involve a larger sample size.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that application developers of Spotify and Joox should further optimize their products to be more in line with the wishes and needs of users in Indonesia. The developers should consider the perceived quality of the applications and provide better services to their users.
