Introduction

The experiment was conducted on Jl. Seta Budi, Simpang Selayang Village, Medan Tuntung District, with a height of about 25 meters above sea level, from April to August 2012. The study observed various growth parameters and yield of yam plant, including plant length, number of primary and secondary branches, tubers per sample and per plot, tuber diameter, root volume, and harvest index.

Results

The results showed that potassium fertilizer had a significant effect on root volume. However, there is no significant effect of the interaction between the dose of fertilizer and the spacing in all observed parameters. Conversely, the spacing is proven to have a significant effect on the number of primary and secondary branches, the weight of the tubers per sample, and the diameter of the tubers. This shows that the proper planting regulation can increase the growth and yield of yam plants.

Discussion

The findings of this study suggest that potassium fertilizer is not a limiting factor for the growth of yam plants at the location of this study. A higher dose of potassium fertilizer does not always increase yield, and a spacing of 15 cm x 10 cm is proven to be the most optimal planting distance for yam growth. This is consistent with previous studies that have shown that closer spacing arrangements can increase competition between plants, thus affecting the number of branches formed.
