The Application of Phosphate Solvent Microbes and Organic Material Sources to Increase the Absorption of P and Potato Plant (Solanum Tuberosum L.) on Andisol Soils Affected by the Eruption of Mount Sinabung

Introduction

The eruption of Mount Sinabung has had a significant impact on the agricultural land in the surrounding areas, including the Andisol soil in Kutarayat Village, Naman Teran District, Karo Regency, Medan. The eruption has led to a reduction in the nutritional content of the soil and affected the soil structure, resulting in poor plant growth. In this study, we aim to explore the effects of phosphate solvent microbial applications and sources of organic matter on phosphorus absorption (P) and the growth of potato plants (solanum tuberosum L.) in Andisol soil affected by the eruption of Mount Sinabung.

Methodology

This study was conducted from February to June 2015 in Kutarayat Village, Naman Teran District, Karo Regency, Medan. The methodology used in this study was a Factorial Random Design (Rack) with two treatment factors and three replications. The first factor in this study is the type of microbial (M), which consists of four treatment levels: (m0) without microbial application, (m1) application of 30 ml phosphate solvent bacteria, (m2) application of phosphate solvent fungi as much as 30 ml, and (M3) Application of a combination of bacteria and phosphate solvent mushrooms with 15 ml each. While the second factor is the source of organic matter (B) consisting of five levels: (B0) without the application of organic material, (B1) 100 g of cow dung/plant, (B2) chicken manure 100 g/plant, (B3) rice straw 100 G/plants, and (B4) Tithonia diversifolia 100 g/plants.

Observations and Parameters

Observations were made on several parameters, including soil pH (H2O), the number of microbial populations, microbial activity (total respiration), the percentage of soil C-organic, P available, absorption of P, and the dry weight of the canopy and plant roots.

Results

The results of this study indicate that the application of phosphate solvent microbes and organic matter, both individually and in interaction, significantly increases the absorption of P and potato plant growth in Andisol soil that is affected by the eruption of Mount Sinabung.

Andisol soil, which is a type of soil that is rich in minerals and generally has good agricultural capacity, can experience quality degradation due to volcanic activity, including the eruption of Mount Sinabung. When the soil has an eruption, the nutritional content can be reduced and the soil structure can be affected, which has a negative impact on plant growth.

Organic material not only functions as a source of nutrition, but also contributes in improving soil structure, increasing water retention capacity, and enriching soil microbial activity. Therefore, a combination of phosphate solvent microbes and sources of organic matter can be an effective strategy for increasing agricultural output in land affected by volcanic eruption.

Conclusion

The implementation of agricultural technology that utilizes microbes and organic matter can potentially be a solution to improve soil fertility and increase crop productivity in eruption affected areas. This not only provides benefits for local farmers, but also contributes to overall food security.
