Analysis of the Behavior of Organic Rice Farmers in Taking Risks: A Case Study of Karang Anyar Village, Beringin District, Deli Serdang Regency

Introduction

Farmers play a vital role in the agricultural sector, serving as managers, farmers, and community members who live in their environment. As managers, farmers are faced with various alternative choices in decision-making, including the choice of technology and allocation of resources in their farming. The purpose of this study is to analyze the behavior of farmers in taking risks and factors that influence the behavior in Karang Anyar Village, Beringin District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province.

Background

The agricultural sector is a significant contributor to the economy of many countries, including Indonesia. Organic rice farming is a type of farming that does not use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, which can have negative impacts on the environment and human health. However, organic rice farming requires more effort and resources, which can be a challenge for farmers. In this study, we aim to understand the behavior of organic rice farmers in taking risks and the factors that influence their behavior.

Methodology

This study uses primary and secondary data, with an analytical method that includes a model of quadratic utility and multiple linear utility functions. The data were collected through surveys and interviews with 30 organic rice farmers in Karang Anyar Village. The study found that most of the farmers in Karang Anyar Village were still reluctant to take risks in their farm business.

Results

The results of this study showed that there were only 11 organic rice farmers who dared to take risks, while 19 other farmers still did not dare to step in that direction. The two main factors that influence the behavior of farmers in taking risks are the number of family dependents and farming experience. This study found that the two variables had a significant influence on the behavior of organic rice farmers in taking risks.

Number of Family Dependents

The number of family dependents is an important factor because the more dependents a farmer has, the greater the pressure to achieve success in farming. Farmers who have a lot of dependents may be more likely to make more conservative decisions to avoid the risk of crop failure that can have a direct impact on the survival of their families.

Experience Farming

Farming experience also plays a crucial role in the formation of farmers' risk attitudes. Farmers who are more experienced tend to have a better understanding of effective agricultural practices and can be more confident in making decisions that involve risks. They are usually better prepared to face challenges that may arise in organic farming, which is often more vulnerable to environmental variability compared to conventional agriculture.

Implications for Agricultural Policies

This research has important implications for agricultural policies at the local and national levels. To increase the courage of farmers in taking risks, there needs to be a training and assistance program that focuses on increasing knowledge and skills of farming. In addition, financial support and access to better agricultural technology can also help farmers feel safer in taking the risks needed to increase their productivity.

By understanding the behavior of farmers and the factors that influence it, stakeholders can design more effective interventions to support organic rice farmers in Karang Anyar Village in facing increasingly complex agricultural challenges. This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focused on organic rice farmers in Karang Anyar Village, which may not be representative of all organic rice farmers in the region. Secondly, the study only used primary and secondary data, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of organic rice farmers in taking risks.
