Introduction

Speaking Arabic fluently is a dream shared by every Arabic literature student. However, the reality on the ground shows that the ability to speak Arabic students of Arabic Literature at the University of North Sumatra (USU) is still not optimal. This is a serious problem, given the inadequate Arabic environment surrounding them. This study aims to examine the influence of the language environment on the ability to speak Arabic students of USU Arabic Literature.

Background

The University of North Sumatra (USU) is one of the leading universities in Indonesia, known for its strong programs in various fields, including Arabic Literature. However, despite the university's efforts to provide quality education, the ability to speak Arabic students of USU Arabic Literature is still not optimal. This is a concern, given the importance of language skills in achieving academic and professional success.

The Role of Language Environment in Mastering Arabic

The language environment plays a crucial role in mastering language. The more often a person is exposed to a language, the better their ability to use that language. In the context of this research, the Arabic environment around USU Arabic Literature students is inadequate. This is evidenced by the fact that Arabic is rarely used in daily life, both in the family and community environment.

Theoretical Framework

This study refers to the classical habituation theory of Ivan Pavlov, which states that behavior can be formed repeatedly. This theory explains that the more often a person is exposed to a stimulus (in this case, Arabic), the stronger the response caused (the ability to speak Arabic). The classical habituation theory provides a useful framework for understanding the role of language environment in shaping language skills.

Methodology

This study uses a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect data. The research subjects were active students of Arabic Literature in 2018, chosen because they were the oldest generation in the study year. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The results showed that the ability to speak Arabic students of USU Arabic Literature students is still not optimal, with only a small number of students able to speak Arabic smoothly.

Results

The results of this study showed that the language environment had a significant influence on the ability to speak Arabic students of USU Arabic Literature, with an influence of 43.6%. This means that the language environment plays an important role in improving the ability to speak Arabic students. The results also showed that the language environment is a critical factor in shaping language skills, and that efforts to improve the language environment are necessary to improve language skills.

The study highlights the need for language education institutions to create a conducive language environment that supports language learning. Making student exchange programs to Arab countries: Student exchange programs to Arab countries can provide students with opportunities to interact directly with authentic Arabic speakers, which can help improve language skills.
Utilizing technology to create an interactive Arabic learning environment: Technology can be used to create an interactive Arabic learning environment that supports language learning, such as through online learning platforms, mobile applications, and social media.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. The study only focused on students of Arabic Literature at the University of North Sumatra, and the results may not be generalizable to other language education institutions. Additionally, the study only examined the influence of language environment on the ability to speak Arabic, and did not examine other factors that may influence language skills.

Future Research Directions

Future research should examine the influence of other factors on language skills, such as motivation, self-efficacy, and language anxiety. Additionally, future research should examine the effectiveness of different language learning strategies and methods in improving language skills.
