Relevance of Alumni Education Economic Study Program for the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra to the World of Work

Introduction

In today's competitive job market, higher education institutions are under pressure to ensure that their graduates are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the world of work. The Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, is no exception. The Development Economics Study Program at this faculty aims to produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable in their field but also relevant to the demands of the job market. This study aims to explore the relevance of the education of graduates of this program to the world of work, with a focus on observations in their field of work.

The Importance of Relevance in Higher Education

Relevance in higher education refers to the extent to which the knowledge and skills acquired by graduates are applicable to the demands of the job market. This is a critical aspect of higher education, as it directly affects the employability and success of graduates in their chosen careers. A study by the World Economic Forum (2018) found that by 2022, more than 75 million jobs will be displaced by automation, while 133 million new roles will emerge that require human skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. This highlights the need for higher education institutions to focus on producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also relevant to the demands of the job market.

Research Methods

This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach, in which data is collected through a questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents who are graduates of Economic Study Programs from the 2011 to 2015. Sample selection is carried out with proportional random sampling techniques to ensure that each individual has the same opportunity to participate in this research. To analyze data, the Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis method is used, which allows researchers to understand the relationship between variables in this study.

Findings and Analysis

The results of this study show that the relevance of alumni education to the world of work, measured based on the field of work they were involved in, was 66% in the first job and increased to 71% at the current job. This shows that the majority of graduates have succeeded in getting jobs in accordance with their educational background, both in the economic and non-economic fields.

Further analysis shows that the cumulative achievement index (GPA) has a positive and significant influence on the work success of graduates. This indicates that good academic achievement is very supportive of graduates in getting good jobs. However, it is interesting to note that the study period does not have a significant influence on success in the world of work. This can be interpreted that the length of time spent in completing studies is not directly proportional to the success in the world of work.

On the other hand, organizational activity is proven to have a positive and significant influence on the achievement of graduates in the world of work. Involvement in the organization during the study period provides valuable experience and network, which can help graduates when entering the job market.

The Role of Academic Achievement in Success

This study found that good academic achievement has a positive and significant influence on the work success of graduates. This is consistent with previous studies that have found a positive relationship between academic achievement and career success (Hanushek & Wößmann, 2015; Heckman & Kautz, 2013).

Organizational activity is another critical factor in determining the success of graduates in the world of work. This study found that involvement in the organization during the study period provides valuable experience and network, which can help graduates when entering the job market. This is consistent with previous studies that have found a positive relationship between organizational activity and career success (Betz & Hackett, 1981; Lent et al., 1994).

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the relevance of the education of graduates of the Development Economics Study Program in the University of North Sumatra is very high, especially related to the field of work they choose. The high influence of GPA and organizational activities emphasizes the importance of self-development and network formation during the study period. This research gives a clear picture of the importance of compatibility between education received by graduates with the demands of the world of work and underlines aspects that can be improved to prepare graduates to face challenges in the future.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Emphasize the importance of academic achievement: Higher education institutions should emphasize the importance of academic achievement in determining the success of graduates in the world of work.
Encourage organizational activity: Higher education institutions should encourage students to participate in organizational activities during their study period to gain valuable experience and network.
Develop relevant curricula: Higher education institutions should develop curricula that are relevant to the demands of the job market and provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their chosen careers.
Provide career guidance: Higher education institutions should provide career guidance to students to help them make informed decisions about their future careers.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the sample size is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focuses on graduates of the Development Economics Study Program at the University of North Sumatra, which may not be representative of graduates from other programs or institutions. Finally, the study only examines the relevance of alumni education to the world of work, which may not capture other important aspects of higher education.

This study provides several avenues for future research. Firstly, future studies could examine the relevance of alumni education to the world of work in other countries or regions.
