Introduction

The University of North Sumatra (USU) campus, located in Padang Bulan, Medan, is renowned for its lush greenery and serves as an essential green open space (RTH) in the heart of the city. This campus not only functions as a hub for education but also plays a vital role in maintaining ecological, economic, and social balance. The present study aims to investigate the characteristics of leaf stomata in 83 tree species on the USU campus, with the ultimate goal of providing valuable insights into the adaptation and biodiversity of the region.

Background

Stomata are small pores found on the surface of leaves, responsible for gas exchange and transpiration. The characteristics of stomata, such as size, shape, and distribution, play a crucial role in determining the efficiency of photosynthesis and water regulation in plants. Understanding the stomata characteristics of various tree species can provide valuable information about their adaptation to the environment and their role in maintaining biodiversity.

Methods

This study employed replica techniques and observations using nail polish to analyze the stomata characteristics of 83 tree species on the USU campus. The results of this study are expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the stomata characteristics of various tree species and their role in maintaining biodiversity in the region.

Results

The results of this study revealed four different types of stomata, namely parasitic stomata, anomocytic, anisocytic, and diasitic. The parasitic stomata type was found to be the most dominant, accounting for 91.56% of the observed tree species. This suggests that the trees on the USU campus have adapted to the environment, which may have varying levels of humidity.

Stomata Characteristics of Various Tree Species

The Kesambi species (Schleichera oleosa) recorded the highest number of stomata, while the Tampui (Baccaurea Macrocarpa) had the least number of stomata. This finding suggests that the Kesambi species has a better ability in the process of photosynthesis and gas exchange, which is essential for the survival of plants. The size of stomata also varies, with the widest size found in mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) and the narrowest sizes found in Bangkirai (Shorea laevis). This variation can be related to the adaptation of species to the surrounding microclimate conditions.

Stomata Distribution

All observed species have a random stomata distribution. This phenomenon may be related to the survival strategy of plants in various environments, where each species seeks to maximize the efficiency of carbon dioxide absorption and humidity regulation.
