Introduction

The fertility of dry land agricultural soil is a crucial factor in determining the productivity of agricultural land. In the Bonatua Lunasi District, Toba Samosir Regency, the potential for fertility of dry land agricultural soil has been a topic of interest for researchers and agricultural experts. This study aims to reveal the potential for fertility of dry land agricultural soil in Bonatua Lunasi District, Toba Samosir Regency, and to identify the challenges and efforts to improve soil fertility in this region.

Methodology

This study was conducted in July to August 2018, using a survey method with stratified random sampling soil sampling. Eight samples of dry land in the region were analyzed to determine the level of fertility, with parameters including soil texture, specific gravity, pH, cation exchange capacity, base cations content (Ca, Mg, Na, and K), P-Available, C-Organic, and the amount of soil microorganisms.

Results

The results of this study showed that the land in Bonatua District was dominated by the sand fraction, resulting in an average soil specific gravity above 1 g/cm3, which indicates a bad soil structure. Soil conditions are also classified as very sour with low pH, thus inhibiting the absorption of nutrients by plants. In addition, the content of P-available, C-organic, alkaline cations, and the number of soil microorganisms is relatively low, indicating a very low level of fertility. This condition is found in all regions of Bonatua Lunasi District, including villages such as Harungguan, Lumban Lobu, Lumban Sangkalan, Naga Timbul Naga, Dragon Timbul Timur, Pardolok Lumban Lobu, Partoruan Lumban Lobu, Sanggahon, Sihiong, Silamosik II, Silombu, and Sinar Sabungan.
