Introduction

The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) is one of the largest stock exchanges in Southeast Asia, with a significant number of consumer goods companies listed on it. The completeness of financial statement disclosure is a critical issue for these companies, as it affects the transparency and accountability of their financial information. This study aims to analyze the effect of profit management on the completeness of financial statement disclosure in consumer goods companies listed on the IDX during the period 2005 to 2007.

Background

Profit management, also known as earnings management, is a practice where managers use various techniques to manipulate financial statements to achieve certain goals. This practice can occur when shareholders do not have access to relevant information to monitor manager actions, which in turn can encourage earnings management practices. As a result, managers tend to choose to express less information in financial statements. The significant influence of earnings management on the disclosure of financial statements shows that managers have a tendency to manipulate information to make it look better from a financial point of view.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative method with simple regression analysis to examine the relationship between earnings management and the completeness of financial statement disclosure. The data used in this study are the financial statements of each company published through the official website www.idx.co.id. The sampling method used is purposive sampling, where 29 companies were selected for the study. The variables studied in this study were earnings management as an independent variable (X) and the ratio of disclosure of financial statements as a dependent variable (Y).

Results

The results of this study showed that earnings management has a significant positive influence on the disclosure of financial statements. These findings provide important insights for stakeholders, including investors and regulators, regarding how earnings management practices can affect the transparency of financial information presented by the company.
